چکیده
An expansion-repression mechanism by which morphogen gradients can adjust to size and growth had been postulated as a model. Now, its molecular nature has been uncovered.

Transducing the Dpp Morphogen Gradient in the Wing of Drosophila Regulation of Dpp Targets by brinker
Dpp, a TGFbeta, organizes pattern in the Drosophila wing by acting as a graded morphogen, activating different targets above distinct threshold concentrations. Like other TGFbetas, Dpp appears to induce transcription directly via activation of a SMAD, Mad. However, here we demonstrate that Dpp can also control gene expression indirectly by downregulating the expression of the brinker gene, whic...
متن کاملConversion of an Extracellular Dpp/BMP Morphogen Gradient into an Inverse Transcriptional Gradient
Morphogen gradients control body pattern by differentially regulating cellular behavior. Here, we analyze the molecular events underlying the primary response to the Dpp/BMP morphogen in Drosophila. Throughout development, Dpp transduction causes the graded transcriptional downregulation of the brinker (brk) gene. We first provide significance for the brk expression gradient by showing that dif...
متن کاملRobustness of Morphogen Gradients with "bucket Brigade" Transport through Membrane-associated Non-receptors.
Robust multiple-fate morphogen gradients are essential for embryo development. Here, we analyze mathematically a model of morphogen gradient (such as Dpp in Drosophila wing imaginal disc) formation in the presence of non-receptors with both diffusion of free morphogens and the movement of morphogens bound to non-receptors. Under the assumption of rapid degradation of unbound morphogen, we intro...
متن کاملTheoretical analysis of degradation mechanisms in the formation of morphogen gradients.
Fundamental biological processes of development of tissues and organs in multicellular organisms are governed by various signaling molecules, which are called morphogens. It is known that spatial and temporal variations in the concentration profiles of signaling molecules, which are frequently referred as morphogen gradients, lead to a cell differentiation via activating specific genes in a con...
متن کاملHormetic electric field theory of pattern formation.
The hormetic morphogen theory of curvature (Fosslien 2009) proposes that hormetic morphogen concentration gradients modulate the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by cells along the gradients (field cells) and thus regulate their proliferation and induce curvature such as vascular wall curvature; however, it is unclear whether such morphogen gradients can also determine the histological...
